HOUSING CENSUS 1998
A Housing census was conducted to know the Housing density, nature of tenure, period of construction, building material, source of water supply, lighting and fuel used in FATA other than cold area, the Housing census was conducted during the first fortnight of December 1980. But in cold areas of FATA census operation was started ten days earlier.
During 1998, there were 341114 Housing units in FATA whose condition in respect of construction material used, are as under:

SOURCE OF DRINKING WATER
Around 19% of the housing units are using piped water, majority of which has that facility in their houses.
About 3.2% are using hand pump for portable water. Still 35.1% house holds are using portable water taken out from wells. Such facility is mostly being availed in rural areas where their percentage share is also 35.1%.
SOURCE OF LIGHTING
Predominant housing units are using electricity as source of light representing 62.0% of the housing units both in urban & rural areas. Kerosene oil being used by approximately 36.1% of the housing units while other sources of light like patromax, mustard oil etc. are hardly being used by 1.9% of the housing units.
COOKING, FUEL
Approximately 92% of housing units are using wood as cooking fuel in their houses while nearly 1.7% are using Kerosene Oil for this purpose. Hardly, 1.3% are using gas & 5.3% other sources of cooking fuel in their houses. Regarding urban & rural differential wood is mainly used representing 84.7% in urban areas and 91.9% in rural housing units.
